San Blas is one of the most accessible Pueblos Mágicos from Tepic and boasts a stunning coastline. Here, the beaches range from long, family-friendly stretches to almost untouched spots where only a few surfers make it.
El Borrego Beach
The town beach of San Blas. Wide, with moderate waves and basic services. Its sunsets are the great attraction. There are palapas where you can try pescado zarandeado (chili-marinated grilled fish) and steamed shrimp.
Bahía de Matanchén
One of the largest bays in Mexico and a family paradise. Its waters are warm and its sand fine. This is where the famous Long Wave is ridden, considered by some surfing references to be the longest in the world.
Las Islitas
A beach of calm waters with rock formations that create small pools. There are palapas where you can try the area’s traditional “banana bread” and fish fresh from the sea.
Aticama
A fishing town with a quiet beach. Perfect for a meal by the sea without the crowds.
Los Cocos and Miramar
Less touristy, with dense vegetation and few buildings. Ideal for those who want a pristine beach and sunsets all to themselves.
Santa Cruz Beach
About 25 km from the center of San Blas. A fishing village with palapas where the food is excellent and cheap.
Tips for your visit
- Use insect repellent at dusk. There are sand flies (jejenes), especially in the rainy season.
- Bring cash; not every beach has an ATM.
- Pair your beach day with a boat tour through La Tovara.
- Try the banana bread, a local specialty.
How to get there
From Tepic it is 69 km by road (~1h 15 min). From Puerto Vallarta, about 3 hours.
San Blas proves that Nayarit is much more than the Riviera. This is a place to come and breathe in the sea, history and silence.
