Before you go

Where is Nayarit?

Nayarit is a state on Mexico’s Pacific coast, between Sinaloa to the north and Jalisco to the south and east. Its capital is Tepic and its coastline runs about 300 kilometers, from Banderas Bay (next to Puerto Vallarta) up to Tecuala. Learn more about Nayarit.

Are Riviera Nayarit and Puerto Vallarta the same thing?

No. Puerto Vallarta is a city in the state of Jalisco; the Riviera Nayarit is Nayarit’s coastal strip that begins just across the Ameca River, 10 minutes from the Vallarta airport, and includes Nuevo Nayarit, Bucerías, Punta Mita, Sayulita, San Pancho, Guayabitos and San Blas. They share an airport and a bay, but they are different states with different time zones and hotel taxes.

Do I need a visa to visit Nayarit?

Nayarit follows Mexico’s national entry rules. Citizens of the United States, Canada, the European Union and many other countries enter as tourists with a valid passport and the Forma Migratoria Múltiple (FMM) for up to 180 days. Check your situation with Mexico’s Instituto Nacional de Migración before booking.

Is it safe to travel to Nayarit?

Nayarit’s tourist areas (Riviera Nayarit, San Blas, Tepic, the Pueblos Mágicos) receive millions of visitors a year with the same precautions you’d take anywhere: don’t flash valuables, use official taxis or ride apps, avoid secondary roads at night and stay away from anything illegal. Check your own government’s travel advisories before and during your trip, and follow the instructions of local authorities on the road.

What time zone is Nayarit in?

Nayarit has two. The municipality of Bahía de Banderas (Nuevo Nayarit, Bucerías, Punta Mita, Sayulita, San Pancho) uses Central Time (UTC-6), the same as Puerto Vallarta. The rest of the state, including Tepic, Compostela, Guayabitos and San Blas, uses Pacific Time (UTC-7). Mexico abolished daylight saving time in 2022, so there are no clock changes; just reset your watch when you drive from Sayulita to Guayabitos.

What should I pack?

Light clothes, swimwear, sandals and a pair of sneakers for trails and canyons; reef-safe sunscreen (mandatory at the Marietas Islands), insect repellent, a hat and a light jacket for December to February nights in Tepic or the mountains. If you come between May and October, add a compact rain jacket. Bring cash in pesos and a digital copy of your passport and FMM.

Getting there and around

Which airport should I fly into?

For the Riviera Nayarit (Sayulita, Punta Mita, Bucerías, Nuevo Nayarit) use Puerto Vallarta (PVR), 10–60 minutes away. For Tepic, San Blas, Guayabitos, Compostela and the inland Pueblos Mágicos, Tepic–Riviera Nayarit International Airport (TPQ) is the better choice: in 2026 it has Volaris, Aeroméxico and Viva flights from Mexico City, Tijuana and Los Angeles, plus winter routes from Houston, Calgary and Vancouver. Guadalajara (GDL) is the third option, usually the cheapest but 3–4 hours away by road. Details in how to get to Nayarit.

Is there Uber in Nayarit?

Uber works in Puerto Vallarta and in Bahía de Banderas (Nuevo Nayarit, Bucerías, La Cruz). You can book a ride to Sayulita, San Pancho or Punta Mita, but getting one back is hard, so plan on local taxis or the Compostela bus ($40–60 MXN per leg). Tepic has Uber and DiDi; San Blas and Guayabitos have taxis only.

Should I rent a car?

Yes if you’re three or more people or want to combine coast and interior: San Blas, the Santa María del Oro lagoon, Jala or Compostela. Expect about $600–1,200 MXN a day (35–70 USD) with basic insurance included; the “$200 a day” deals leave it out. To move only between Vallarta, Bucerías and Sayulita, the bus is enough.

Money and costs

How much does a trip to Nayarit cost?

In 2026, about $900–1,400 MXN per person per day (50–80 USD) as a backpacker, $2,700–5,800 MXN (155–330 USD) mid-range and from $10,000 MXN (570 USD) for luxury. Sayulita and Punta Mita cost twice as much as San Blas, Guayabitos or Tepic. See the full breakdown in how much a trip to Nayarit costs.

Are US dollars and credit cards accepted?

Dollars are accepted along the Riviera Nayarit, but at a poor exchange rate; paying in pesos is always cheaper. Cards work at hotels, gas stations and most restaurants in Sayulita, Bucerías and Nuevo Nayarit, but street stalls, markets, buses and many beach seafood spots are cash only. Use bank ATMs in Vallarta, Bucerías, Tepic or Compostela: Sayulita’s run dry on weekends and the non-bank machines charge steep fees.

How much should I tip?

10–15% at table-service restaurants, $20–50 MXN for porters or boat crew, and $100–200 MXN per group for the guide on day tours. Check the bill: some tourist restaurants already include service.

Weather and seasons

When is the best time to visit Nayarit?

November through April: dry, sunny days, calm seas, humpback whales and temperatures of 25–30 °C (77–86 °F). It’s also high season, with prices 30–50% higher at Christmas, Holy Week and in February. May through October is hot with afternoon rain, but cheaper, with empty beaches and sea turtle releases.

Are there hurricanes in Nayarit?

The Pacific hurricane season runs May 15 to November 30, with the most activity between August and October. Direct hits on Nayarit are uncommon, but heavy rain and rough surf do happen. If you travel in those months, buy insurance with weather coverage and follow the alerts from Mexico’s national weather service.

When can I see whales in Nayarit?

Humpback whales arrive in Banderas Bay and off the Compostela and San Blas coast in December and leave in March; the official 2025-2026 season ran December 8 to March 23, with the most sightings in January and February. Tours cost about $800–2,000 MXN per person. Full guide: humpback whale watching in Nayarit.

When are sea turtles released?

July through November, with August to October the busiest months. Turtle camps in Nuevo Nayarit, Bucerías, Sayulita, San Pancho, Platanitos and San Blas organize releases at sunset, usually free or by donation. Read about the sea turtle release season in Nayarit.

Beaches and activities

Can I visit the Hidden Beach at the Marietas Islands?

Yes, with rules: Hidden Beach (Playa Escondida or Playa del Amor) is open Wednesday to Sunday, with a limited daily quota and a 30-minute maximum stay, and only with operators authorized by CONANP (Mexico’s protected areas agency) departing from Punta Mita, La Cruz or Nuevo Nayarit. Book at least two weeks ahead; on other days tours visit Nopalera Beach and snorkel instead. More on the Marietas Islands.

Where can I surf as a beginner?

Sayulita is Nayarit’s surf school: soft, consistent waves, board rentals and 1.5–2 hour lessons for about $1,000–1,600 MXN. La Lancha (Punta Mita) and San Pancho are the next step; Las Islitas beach in San Blas has a long, forgiving wave, and Stoner’s Point is for experienced surfers. Guide: where to surf in Nayarit.

Which beaches are best for families with kids?

Guayabitos, for its nearly wave-free water (locals call it the world’s largest natural swimming pool), Bucerías, Nuevo Nayarit, Chacala and Las Islitas in San Blas. Sayulita and San Pancho have stronger currents and suit confident swimmers. See our guide to the destinations of Nayarit.

Culture and food

What are Nayarit’s Pueblos Mágicos?

Pueblo Mágico (“Magical Town”) is a designation from Mexico’s Ministry of Tourism for towns with historic, cultural or natural value. Nayarit has nine in 2026: Sayulita, Mexcaltitán, Jala, Compostela, San Blas, Ahuacatlán, Amatlán de Cañas, Ixtlán del Río and Puerto Balleto (in the Islas Marías). The last five were named in 2023. Meet them in our guide to the magical towns of Nayarit.

What do people eat in Nayarit?

Pescado zarandeado (butterflied fish grilled over mangrove wood), shrimp in every form, aguachile, tlaxtihuil (a shrimp and corn stew), sopes and marlin tostadas, and inland, banana bread and frijoles puercos. Mango, pineapple and mountain-grown coffee are local products. Full guide to the cuisine of Nayarit.

What language is spoken, and do people speak English?

Spanish is the main language; in the mountains, Wixárika (Huichol), Náayeri (Cora), Tepehuan and Mexicanero communities keep their own languages. In Sayulita, Punta Mita, Bucerías and Nuevo Nayarit, English is common in hotels, restaurants and tours; in Tepic, San Blas and the inland towns it’s less so, so a few basic Spanish phrases go a long way.

What crafts should I buy in Nayarit?

Wixárika art: yarn paintings, beaded figures and jewelry with sacred symbolism, which you can buy directly from artisan families in Tepic, Sayulita and San Blas. Also hats and leatherwork from Ixtlán, pottery, and the chocolate and peanut sweets of Amatlán de Cañas. Buying directly from the maker ensures the money reaches the community. More on the culture of Nayarit.

Safety and health

Can I drink the tap water?

No. As elsewhere in Mexico, drink bottled or filtered water, which hotels and restaurants also use for ice and drinks. A 20-liter jug costs about $40–60 MXN and many shops refill reusable bottles.

Are there mosquitoes or dengue in Nayarit?

There are mosquitoes year-round and more in the rainy season (May to November), and Nayarit records dengue cases every year, mostly around Tepic. The precautions are simple: DEET or picaridin repellent at dawn and dusk, light long sleeves in mangroves and jungle, and lodging with screens or air conditioning. If you get a high fever with body aches during or after your trip, see a doctor and avoid aspirin and ibuprofen.
