Magical Towns of Nayarit: The Complete Guide
Seven Corners with a Soul of Their Own
Nayarit is one of the Mexican states with the greatest number of Magical Towns, a distinction granted by the Ministry of Tourism to places that stand out for their historical, cultural and natural wealth.
The Seven Magical Towns of Nayarit
1. Jala
The first in the state. At the foot of the El Ceboruco volcano, famous for its Corn Fair and the Lateran Basilica of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción.
2. Ahuacatlán
Home to Nayarit’s only traditional bullfighting festival. A historic stopover town on the Camino Real, with mango sweets renowned throughout the region.
3. Amatlán de Cañas
Surrounded by waterfalls, hot springs and historic mining. The natural El Manto water park is its main attraction.
4. Compostela
One of the oldest settlements in the state, founded in 1530. Known for its leatherwork, Isla del Coral and Playa Platanitos.
5. Ixtlán del Río
Gateway to southern Nayarit and guardian of the Los Toriles archaeological zone, the most important in the state.
6. Sayulita
A fishing village turned icon of surfing and bohemian life. Gentle-surf beaches, galleries and an international community that adopted it as home.
7. San Blas
A historic port with mangroves, a colonial fort (La Contaduría) and the beaches of Matanchén. A paradise for migratory birds and sea turtles.
Magical Neighborhood: Bellavista
In addition to the seven towns, Nayarit has the Magical Neighborhood of Bellavista, in the municipality of Compostela, recognized for its industrial architecture and its textile past.
How to Tour the Magical Towns?
The towns of the southern corridor (Jala, Ahuacatlán, Ixtlán del Río, Amatlán de Cañas) can be visited together on a two- or three-day route from Tepic. Compostela and San Blas are stops near the Riviera Nayarit, while Sayulita deserves a dedicated stay.
