What is Charco Azul Canyon?

Charco Azul Canyon is a spectacular geological formation located in the community of Real de Acuitapilco, within the municipality of Compostela. It is an active canyoning gorge, carved over millennia by a river of crystal-clear water that descends powerfully down a 380-meter drop over roughly 4 kilometers. The experience is defined by its thrilling progression: a technical descent that involves walking, swimming, jumping, and rappelling down waterfalls, some of them more than 20 meters high. With a difficulty level rated for adventurers with some experience (V4, A2, III), it promises a day of adrenaline and personal achievement in a setting of wild, untouched beauty, far from the crowds.

The experience step by step

The adventure begins in the community, from where you hike toward the starting point of the descent. After a brief safety talk and an equipment check, you will enter the riverbed. The first steps are deceptively calm, but soon the gorge closes in and the real excitement begins. You will face your first rappel down a refreshing waterfall, descending the wet rock with the thundering sound of the water at your back. After each descent, deep-blue pools await, perfect for swimming and floating as you admire the canyon’s vertical walls. The pace is a rewarding succession of challenges: controlled jumps into deep pools, natural slides formed by polished rock, and more rappels that will test your technique. The final reward is the feeling of having conquered a path of water, rock, and lush vegetation, culminating at a point where the canyon opens up again, filling you with deep satisfaction.

When to go and how to get there

The ideal season to take on the descent of Charco Azul Canyon is from November to June, when the river’s flow is safe and the weather is more favorable, avoiding the heavy rainy season. To get there, from Tepic take Federal Highway 15 toward Compostela. After reaching the town of Compostela, continue toward Laguna de Samahó for approximately 7 kilometers. At that point, turn right to travel the final 8 kilometers of dirt road that lead to the community of Real de Acuitapilco, where you can park your vehicle. It is highly recommended to hire the services of a local guide who specializes in the area. Not only will they provide the technical equipment and expert guidance, but they can also arrange transportation within the community to the exact starting point of the approach to the canyon, ensuring smooth and safe logistics.

Every rappel completed, every pool crossed, leaves an indelible mark of what we are capable of when we dare to step beyond the familiar.
