Things to do in Tepic
Historic center
Tepic’s historic center can be walked in a morning. On the Plaza Principal stand the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception (neo-Gothic, with two slender towers), the City Hall and the arcades with cafés. Two blocks away, the Government Palace holds murals on the history of Nayarit; nearby are the Amado Nervo House Museum (birthplace of the poet), the Regional Museum of Nayarit (shaft-tomb archaeology) and the Museum of the Five Peoples, devoted to Wixárika (Huichol), Cora, Tepehuano, Mexicanero and mestizo art. We mapped the full walk in the historic Tepic route.
Cruz de Zacate temple and Loma de la Cruz
The Temple and Former Convent of the Cruz de Zacate (founded in the 16th century) keeps a cross of grass that, according to tradition, grows without anyone planting it. From there, climb the hill known as Loma de la Cruz, the city’s classic lookout: three crosses on top, views over the valley and the Sangangüey, and trails used by runners and cyclists at dawn.
Parks and urban nature
La Loma Park, with its children’s train and gardens, is the green lung of downtown; the Ecological Park and La Noria Forest are good for walking or jogging. For a different panoramic view, the lookout in the Zitácua neighborhood (a Wixárika community inside the city) shows all of Tepic.
Sangangüey volcano
Sangangüey (2,340 m / 7,677 ft) dominates the skyline southeast of Tepic. The climb is a demanding 5-to-7-hour round trip from the foothills; we explain it step by step in the Sangangüey volcano route.
Santa María del Oro, 45 minutes away
The crater lagoon of Santa María del Oro is 50 km from Tepic. You can swim, paddle and eat fish chicharrón on the shore; it is the most popular day trip from the capital. Read the lagoon that changes color before you go.
If you only have 24 hours, our Tepic in 1 day itinerary arranges all of this into a realistic route.

What does Tepic mean?
Tepic comes from Nahuatl. The most accepted reading breaks it into tetl (stone) and pic or pictli (solid, hard): “place of solid stones” or “hard hill”, a reference to the volcanic hills around the valley. Another interpretation links it to a short-cycle variety of corn once grown in the area. The name was recorded in colonial times, and the Spanish town founded in 1531 adopted it when it settled beside the original indigenous village.
