Tecuala, Nayarit: El Novillero Beach, Seafood, Weather
Tecuala, Nayarit is the coastal municipality at the far northern end of the state, 132 km from Tepic and 157 km from Mazatlán. Its big draw is El Novillero, more than 80 km of continuous sand that makes it the longest beach in Mexico. Tecuala also has the lagoons and mangroves of Marismas Nacionales, wide farm country and seafood good enough to justify the trip on its own.
It’s a quiet place of open beach and unhurried small-town life, far from the Riviera Nayarit scene. In this guide you’ll find how to get to Tecuala from Tepic and Mazatlán, what to do on the beach and in the wetlands, what to eat, when the local festivals take place and what the weather is like through the year.

Tecuala Nayarit beach: El Novillero
If you’re looking up Tecuala for its beach, you’re looking for El Novillero. It’s a strip of fine, flat, nearly straight sand running for more than 80 km along Nayarit’s northern coast, the longest continuous beach in Mexico. The main access point is the village of Playa Novillero, about 25 km from Tecuala (around 30 minutes on the Acaponeta–El Novillero road).
- What to do: walk for miles without meeting anyone, watch the sunset, fish from the shore, ride horses and look for birds.
- Services: the village has enramadas (open-air seafood restaurants under palm roofs) and simple lodging; beyond it, the beach has no services. Bring water, shade and sunscreen.
- Swimming: Pacific swells can be strong. Only go in where you see other swimmers, and never alone.
- Driving: to reach remote stretches you need a high-clearance or 4×4 vehicle; don’t take a low car onto loose sand.

Wetlands and mangroves
Behind the beach lies the lagoon and estuary system of Marismas Nacionales, one of the largest mangrove areas on Mexico’s Pacific coast and a Ramsar wetland since 1995. Agua Brava, the system’s main lagoon, is in this area. Four mangrove species grow here (red, black, white and buttonwood), along with more than 250 bird species, many of them winter migrants.
Boat trips through the estuaries and channels are arranged with local fishermen in the coastal villages; ask in Playa Novillero. The best birding season runs from November to March. See also the bird-watching season in Nayarit.
Seafood in Tecuala: what to eat
Tecuala’s seafood comes straight from the estuaries and the sea in front of you, and it shows. Don’t miss:
- Estuary shrimp as aguachile (raw shrimp “cooked” in lime and chili), cocktails, a la diabla (spicy) or breaded.
- Pescado zarandeado: whole fish butterflied and grilled over wood, the signature dish of the Nayarit coast. Its story is in pescado zarandeado.
- Ceviches and tostadas with fish and shrimp.
- Botaneras: bars in town where seafood snacks keep arriving with your drinks; part of the local scene.
