Getting to Sayulita is easier than it looks. The town sits about 40 km (25 miles) north of Puerto Vallarta International Airport (PVR), and the drive up Federal Highway 200 takes 45 to 60 minutes. Sayulita has no airport and no bus station of its own, so nearly every traveler arrives through Vallarta, whether by public bus, taxi, private transfer, rideshare app or rental car.
This guide covers each option with travel times, approximate 2026 prices and who it suits best, plus the routes from the Tepic–Riviera Nayarit airport, Guadalajara, Tepic and Bucerías. At the end you will find a comparison table, how to get around town, and practical tips that save headaches on the way back.
Still deciding what to do once you arrive? Read our guide to Sayulita, and if you are coming from abroad, start with how to get to Nayarit.
From Puerto Vallarta Airport (PVR)
PVR is the most convenient gateway. It sits at the northern edge of the city, beside the Nayarit state line, and Highway 200 runs straight north through Bucerías and La Cruz de Huanacaxtle to Sayulita. You have four ways to cover the distance.
The Compostela bus (the budget option)
Buses run by the Compostela line, white and green (some carry the red, green and white Riviera Nayarit livery), leave from the far side of the highway across from the airport. Walk out of the terminal, cross the pedestrian bridge over the highway and wait at the stop on the north side. Look for “Sayulita” written on the windshield: not every Compostela bus reaches the town, since some end their route in Bucerías or La Cruz.
- Fare: approx. 50–70 MXN (3–4 USD) per person in 2026, paid in cash to the driver.
- Frequency: every 15–20 minutes, roughly from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm.
- Travel time: 1 to 1.5 hours, because it stops in every town along the highway.
- Where to get off: the last stop is at the entrance to Sayulita, next to the health clinic; the main plaza is a 5–10 minute walk from there.
It is ideal if you travel light; with big suitcases or small children, the bridge and a crowded bus are a hassle.
Airport taxi or private transfer
Authorized airport taxis charge by zone, and Sayulita falls into one of the farthest zones: in 2026 expect approx. 1,000–1,700 MXN (55–90 USD) per vehicle. Private transfers booked in advance start at approx. 75–120 USD for a van seating 4 to 6, with the driver waiting at the exit; for groups of four or more, the cost per person is close to a rideshare.
Uber or DiDi
Both apps work in the Bahía de Banderas (Banderas Bay) area, but they are not allowed to pick up inside the airport. The usual workaround is to cross the same pedestrian bridge and request the ride from the north side of the highway. A ride to Sayulita runs approx. 600–950 MXN (35–50 USD) in 2026 depending on time and demand; you will need mobile data, so consider a local SIM or eSIM.
Rental car via Highway 200
The major rental companies have counters at PVR. The route is simple: take Federal Highway 200 north, pass Bucerías and La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, and after about 40 km you will see the Sayulita turnoff on the left. There are no toll booths between the airport and Sayulita; the whole stretch is a free road. It is a divided highway as far as La Cruz and then becomes a winding two-lane mountain road; avoid driving it at night if you do not know it. Renting makes sense if you plan to visit San Pancho, Punta de Mita or Guayabitos; if you are staying put in Sayulita, a car is more burden than help.
Check flight schedules and services on the official Puerto Vallarta International Airport website.
From Tepic–Riviera Nayarit Airport (TPQ)
Amado Nervo International Airport, rebranded as Tepic–Riviera Nayarit, extended its runway and in 2026 receives flights from Mexico City, Los Angeles, Houston and Calgary, among others. It is about 130 km (80 miles) from Sayulita; the drive along the Tepic–Compostela–Las Varas toll road and then south on Highway 200 takes 1.5 to 2 hours.
Your options are a rental car, a private transfer (from approx. 2,500 MXN / 140 USD per van) or the airport’s shared shuttle, with stops in Guayabitos, San Pancho and Sayulita; book it before you fly. More details on the Tepic–Riviera Nayarit Airport page.
From Guadalajara
Driving on the toll highway
The distance is about 330 km (205 miles). Since the final section of the Guadalajara–Puerto Vallarta highway (Las Varas–Compostela) opened, the trip has dropped to 3.5–4.5 hours. Take the toll road toward Tepic, follow the signs for Compostela / Puerto Vallarta, and exit at Las Varas onto Highway 200 heading south; from there it is about 45 minutes through Guayabitos, Lo de Marcos and San Pancho. Tolls add up to approx. 1,300–1,500 MXN (70–80 USD) each way in 2026; an electronic tag (IAVE or PASE) speeds things up. The free mountain route takes 6 hours or more.
By bus
Vallarta Plus and ETN run frequent departures from Guadalajara to Puerto Vallarta (4.5 to 5.5 hours, approx. 700–1,200 MXN / 40–65 USD depending on company and class). When you buy your ticket, ask whether your departure stops in Bucerías or Nuevo Vallarta: it saves doubling back from the Vallarta bus station, which in any case is very close to the airport. From either point, take the Compostela bus on to Sayulita.
From Tepic
The state capital is about 125 km (78 miles) from Sayulita: 1.5 to 2 hours by car on the toll road to Las Varas and then Highway 200. From the Tepic bus station, regional buses bound for Puerto Vallarta stop in La Peñita, Guayabitos, San Pancho and Sayulita; the trip takes 2.5 to 3 hours and costs approx. 180–260 MXN (10–15 USD). If you are combining coast and capital, see our guide to Tepic in one day.
From Bucerías and Nuevo Vallarta
If you are staying on the southern side of Bahía de Banderas, Sayulita is 25–30 km away. The Compostela bus marked “Sayulita” passes along the highway in Bucerías every 15–20 minutes and takes 30–40 minutes (approx. 30–45 MXN); from Nuevo Vallarta you need to get out to Highway 200 to catch it. A taxi or Uber takes 25–35 minutes for approx. 500–800 MXN (30–45 USD).

Getting around Sayulita
The town is compact: from the bus stop to the main beach is a 10-minute walk, and almost everything lies within 1 km of the plaza. For beaches farther out, such as Playa de los Muertos or Carricitos, or for rentals up in the hills, you have three choices:
- Walking. Streets are cobblestone and steep on the hillsides, so bring comfortable shoes.
- Golf cart. The local vehicle of choice, rented by the day or week (approx. 1,200–1,800 MXN / 65–100 USD per day in 2026) with a valid driver’s license.
- Local taxi. There is a taxi stand beside the plaza and another at the town entrance. Agree on the fare before getting in: rides within Sayulita run approx. 60–120 MXN.
To San Pancho
San Francisco, known to everyone as San Pancho, is only 5 km north. The Compostela bus heading toward La Peñita passes on the highway every 15–20 minutes and costs approx. 15–25 MXN; a taxi from the Sayulita plaza is around 200–250 MXN (12–14 USD) and takes 10 minutes.
To Punta de Mita
Punta de Mita, the usual departure point for the Islas Marietas, is about 25 km to the southwest. A taxi takes 25–30 minutes for approx. 500–800 MXN (30–45 USD). By public transit, ride the Compostela bus to the La Cruz junction and switch to the Punta de Mita bus (approx. 25–40 MXN, every 20–30 minutes); budget about an hour in total. During whale season there are also tours departing directly from Sayulita.
Practical tips before you set out
- Carry cash. Buses, taxis and many food stands take pesos only, and Sayulita’s ATMs often run dry on weekends.
- Do not count on Uber for the return. Finding a rideshare to Sayulita does not guarantee one for the trip back to the airport; in low season or before dawn, no driver may show up. Book a taxi or transfer the night before.
- Parking. Downtown streets are narrow, many are one-way, and spaces vanish in high season. Private lots at the entrances to town charge approx. 100–200 MXN per day in 2026, and several rentals offer a garage.
- Early flights. For departures from PVR before 8:00 am, leave Sayulita with 2.5 hours to spare: the highway backs up around Bucerías and Nuevo Vallarta.
- High season. During Holy Week, Christmas and New Year, Highway 200 and the entrance to town get jammed; arriving on a weekday before noon helps. More advice in our tips for your first trip to Nayarit.
